Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) is one of technology composed of moving vehicles denoted as node in a network to generate a mobile ad-hoc network. It is the most emerging technology for Intelligent Transportation system (ITS). VANET is a category for mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) to ensure communication among vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure environment. In this type of communication nodes are themselves act as server and client for transformation and to share information among vehicles.

VANET requires two types of simulator they are given as follows:

  • Network simulator.

  • Traffic simulator.

Initially VANET (Vehicular Ad-hoc network) are designed to ensure road safety and some value added services.

Characteristics of VANET:

  • Unbound Network size.

  • Sensitive Data exchange under real time.

  • Security and privacy.

  • Modification of network topology.

  • Node mobility.

  • Infrastructure support.

VANET PROJECTS in OMNET++

VANET introduce a framework for inter vehicular communication named as veins which is open source software. Vein are mainly designed to run vehicular network simulation. Vein composed of two different simulators and they are designed as follows:

  • SUMO for Road Traffic simulation.

  • Omnet++ for network simulation.

Above two simulators are connected by TCP socket and run parallel to evaluate an IVC (Inter Vehicular communication). To implement IVC, an interface called Traffic control Interface (TracI) are used. It allows both simulations of road and network traffic simulations.

Network simulation used to configure various networks before implemented in real world. For network simulation Omnet++ develop veins framework.

Omnet++ is a generic architecture used for wired, wireless, other communication networks, hardware architecture, distributed (or) parallel systems. Omnet++ simulations are described in network description language.

SUMO (simulation of urban mobility) which is an open source designed for road ways, Intersection junctions, and traffic lights in map network. It used as a simulation for vehicular communication.

Phases of VANET generation:

  • Import map.

  • Generate network file.

  • Create trip, route and configuration file.

Various Application of vehicular Ad-hoc Network:

  • Broadband services.

  • Traffic coordination and assistance application.

  • Traffic management.

  • Law Enforcement.

  • Comfort and infotainment application.

  • Road safety applications.

  • Reduction and emission of air pollution.

Vehicular Ad-hoc Network is one type of network are developed to control traffic, avoid accident and to reduce unwanted defects occurred by traffic network. Nowadays, various new vehicles are developed with more features and methodology which is completely achieved by a VANET projects.
